Coquitlam Accessible Bathroom Renovation — Walk-In Shower & Modern Finishes
A full bathroom renovation in a Coquitlam home, prioritising accessibility and a clean modern aesthetic. The dated oak vanity, old tub-shower combo with etched glass doors, and worn tile floor were replaced with a white shaker vanity, quartz countertop, a spacious walk-in shower with marble-look porcelain surround and frameless glass, grab bars throughout, and matching grey marble-look floor tile.
The Challenge
The bathroom had reached the end of its useful design life — worn tile, an awkward tub-shower combo, an oak vanity with outdated brown granite, and no accessibility features. The homeowners wanted a bathroom that would work for them as they aged in place, without sacrificing aesthetics. Specifically, they wanted grab bars and a step-free shower without the institutional look typically associated with accessibility renovations.

- Full demolition of existing tile, vanity, countertop, and tub-shower combo
- Subfloor waterproofing and preparation
- Walk-in shower construction with custom curb, waterproofing membrane, and linear drain
- Marble-look porcelain tile installation in shower surround and floor

- Grab bar installation — shower and vanity areas (blocking installed in walls during tile phase)

How We Approached It
Integrating grab bars in a way that looks intentional rather than medical requires planning from the wall-framing stage. Blocking was installed during the tile phase so grab bars could be mounted at the correct height and load-bearing positions, avoiding any visible patching or repairs after tile installation. The walk-in shower also required a properly sloped floor and waterproofing system to prevent moisture issues.

The walk-in shower was constructed with a full waterproofing membrane and linear drain for a clean, step-free entry. Marble-look porcelain was selected to provide a high-end aesthetic while remaining easy to maintain — and consistent between the shower surround and the floor.
The Result
A fully accessible, modern bathroom that doesn't look institutional. The walk-in shower with grab bars and frameless glass reads as a design choice rather than a modification.
